Case Study – Inyanga Counselling

Therapy and crisis counselling still is stigmatised by many, which made the design and creation of the site interesting as well as being a very worthwhile project to be involved in. At the initial brief it was very clear that counselling is not only a very personal service but the service is used by all levels of society and as such the site needed to reflect this. Using warm neutral visuals that complimented the colour and feel of the logo was matched by a very personal blog style site, which allowed people visiting the site to know they were dealing with a real qualified person. As with all sites developed by Websites by Mark both large and small, the same quality and care is shown and this was indeed the same in Mary’s case. As with many of Websites by Marks projects, design and build was complete on time and…

Case Study – Biznet

When six individuals came together to create Biznet, a local business networking group, it wasn’t long before the idea of a website was born. By using cutting edge prototyping and creation tools, the…

Case Study – Carterton Community Centre

The Carterton Community Centre is a local meeting place for the residents of the Shilton Park development in Carterton. To coincide with its completion in 2008 an initial website was commissioned as a central focus for the centre online. Built with no end user access meant anytime the site needed updating it required the original web developer to complete the update. Two years on and the Centre is now flourishing with daily activities and a real buzz of excitement. With the website out of step with the centre, prompted its management team to look for a new solution. By visually updating the feel and redeveloping the site as a CMS, has meant real freedom for the centre in terms of where they can take the website online. Built in to the supplied solution is the ability to add open source pugins and with its integrated blog means the centre now…

Case Study – Cucina by Design

Cucina by Design is a new company based in Witney who provide stylish and contemporary kitchen and bathroom options, which add value to home and enhance their customers living experience. During the initial meeting it became clear the owner Keith had a clear vision of what the company was about, but lacked the clout online to show potential customers of what the company could achieve. We took time to discuss the company’s products and talked about the segmentation of his customer base. His current stationary was very clear and timeless and he wanted these values translated to the web. Keith also had a need to have his website visible to local clients using search engines like Google. Keith also wanted Websites by mark to supply not only the design, but also supply copy, images and the know how to make the site SEO friendly and rank well. Within a few…

Marketing in a Facebook world

With recent reports of Facebook being more popular then Google, we can begin to see the seeds of what has been predicted for some time now. With political parties now actively advertising on Facebook, is your online advertising budget still best served with Google, or has Google finally lost its Ad words Lustre. A free internet Google has always promoted a free internet for all users, and to support this came up with a way for advertisers to pay for user’s usage of its service. It is well documented that users are happy to give up some of their online soul, if it means the results are great applications, interfaces and information for free. With Google’s dominant position in the market place, it meant if there was a dollar to spend on advertising, nearly all went with Google. After all in marketing a bigger audience means better results. Advertise and…

The Acid test for Microsoft

Microsoft is currently advertising Internet Explorer 8 on the television. Is it a case that Microsoft wants to make sure everyone has the best possible internet experience, or is Microsoft concerned about bigger fish? Microsoft’s rise to dominance The first web browser was released in 1991; it was not until 1995 Microsoft released the now legendary Internet Explorer. And it wasn’t until 1999 that Microsoft became the market leader for the internet web browser market. With products that get a dominant market share it’s not always the case that the best product has won. In Microsoft’s case the overriding reason for its success was that the product was shipped with its operating system. By being there by default it required effort to make a change, and for many it was an effort too far. Open Source fruit Unlike today Windows / Mac / Linux operating system choice, early adopters of…

Number of backlinks

Overview When optimising an HTML webpage, factors other than on page and visible changes are also important. Techniques which look to affect search engine optimisation that are not applied to the site itself is known as off page search engine optimisation. History of backlinks Off page search engine optimisation with regards to the Google search engine, as well as others, came from the knowledge that copy on the page can be crafted to appear more relevant to search terms and therefore can artificially affect a pages position on search rank. As Google defined itself as an information engine, its vision was to give people the most relevant website pages for their chosen search term. And with unscrupulous website owners looking to gain unfair advantage, Google made the decision to include factors (or signals) that couldn’t easily be manipulated. One of the way Google came up with, was to assume if…
